Vepocunavos Triadic. c.AD 15-40. Gold stater. 19mm. 5.27g. Wreath crossed by bar with crescent at each end, ring of pellets in each crescent, coiled snake in each quarter./ Lunate horse left, pellet triad under chin, VEP above (VE conjoined), CORF below. ABC 1854, VA 960, BMC 3302-03, S 410. Scintillating EF, neat round flan of resplendent rose gold, sharp strike, full inscription, all four serpents visible. Found Ripon, North Yorkshire, 23 July 2008. RARE
Serpents of one kind or another can be seen snaking around on many of the Celtic coins of Britain (e.g. ABC 237, 270, 303, 330, 357, 485-97, 854, 890, 893, 1019, 1022, 1052, 1076, 1106, 1346, 1376, 1495, 1737, 1743, 1770, 1773, 1779, 1782, 1851-60, 1923, 2072, 2081, 2084, 2225, 2243-49, 2276, 2282, 2291, 2292, 2309, 2321, 2439, 2505, 2831, 2834, 2891, 2894, 2915, 2951 and 3005). This extremely fine Vepocunavos Triadic gold stater is unusual because it has no fewer than four coiled serpents. Are they guarding Vepo’s treasure, seen here as gold bars? Do they represent the eternal cycle of renewal, the four seasons of change (snakes slough their skin three or four times a year) or the regenerative healing power of the tribal goddess? Or, like Chinese dragons, are they elemental serpents of earth, fire, air and water? Whatever their significance, Vepo’s four coiled serpents were clearly derived from the pair that occur on certain South Ferriby staters (e.g. ABC 1743), which may have been inspired by Serpent staters imported from southern Germany (LT 7423 9422); one was found at Clavering, Essex in 2004 (CR List 81, no.14). Significantly, some of these Serpent staters have a prominent pellet triad on the reverse, as do other German Rainbow Cup staters (e.g. LT 9430, 9439, 9442). Significantly, the South Ferriby serpent is coiled around a pellet triad and there are two pellet triads on the Vepo Triadic staters – one under the mare’s head, another under her tail (off flan in this case). Few Vepo Triadic staters are as spectacularly attractive as this one. Few have such a securely and precisely documented findspot and find-date. This is the advantage of buying coins from a dealer who, more often than not buys them directly from the finder.
