Sego Warrior. Sills class 1.c.AD 5-15. Gold stater. 17mm. 5.40g. TASCIO in central tablet, four-spoked wheel with ring either side above and below, pellets on corners of tablet./ Warrior on horse right, right arm raised, SEGO in front, exergual line with ringed-pellet below. ABC 441, VA 1845, BMC 1625-27, DK 93, S 25. CCI 19.2006 (this coin). EF, superb rose gold, full TASCIO, clear SEGO; fantastic full bodied horse, beautifully ornamented. Ex John Follows collection. Found near Wrotham, Kent, 23 October 2015. EXTREMELY RARE only seven others recorded, including five in museums.
Some gold staters are difficult to acquire, others feel well-nigh impossible because they are hidden forever in museums and rarely if ever appear on the open market. Sego staters fall into the latter category. In almost 30 years of dealing this is only the second we’ve seen offered for public sale. We sold the first to Chris Morrison, 1 November 2004, for £3500, later resold by DNW. John Follows’ Sego stater is a much nicer specimen with a clear SEGO (Morrison’s was completely off the flan) and with a precise findspot and find-date (Morrison’s had neither). Commenting on our first Sego stater Rainer Kretz said: “Although in terms of numbers alone it is not the rarest of all British Celtic staters, it is without doubt one of the most elusive.” The first was recorded by William Boys in 1792, possibly the same coin as BMC 1625, acquired by the British Museum in 1855. The other two specimens in the British Museum both came from Sir John Evans: BMC 1627, apparently found in Kent before 1864, and BMC 1626, found near Tring, Herts., before 1890. Who knows when the next Sego stater will be found? And whether it will be sold at auction? We believe this is the first time a Sego stater and Sego quarter stater have been offered for sale in the same auction (see Lot 4). Published in Divided Kingdoms p.98 (this coin).

This must be activated prior to bidding. You must register to bid for each auction.
