Other Notes: Jane Gilchrist Polk was born to General Thomas Gilchrist (second cousin to President James Polk) and Mary E. Polk around Salisbury, NC in 1814. She moved with her family to LaGrange, TN just east of Memphis in the late 1830s. Her 1838 marriage to Robert Bouchelle ended with her death only a few years later in 1841. This portrait was most likely painted around the time of her marriage.
