An early Victorian ormolu mounted walnut, tulipwood, palmwood and marquetry writing table 1840-1845, in the manner of Edward Holmes Baldock The shaped quarter veneered and cartouche inlaid top with a bulrush, scrolled foliate and acanthus inlaid border interspersed by shaped palmwood angles, above a shaped frieze with scrolled foliate strapwork inlaid tablets centred by c-scroll, rocaille and acanthus mounts, incorporating one short oak lined drawer, on slender keeled cabriole legs each mounted with foliate spray-headed cabochon inset rocaille, scroll, floral and shell cast clasps, with chutes terminating in sabots, 103.5cm wide x 55cm deep x 74.5cm high, (40 1/2in wide x 21 1/2in deep x 29in high) Footnotes: A comparable writing table to the offered lot, albeit a slightly smaller model, sold Christie's, London, 19 November 2015, The English Collector, lot 608. Two further related examples sold Christie's, London, 13 November 2014, lots 226 and 227. The present table typifies the strong influence of French 18th century furniture evident in some of the most fashionable English pieces made during the second quarter of the 19th century. In particular, stylistic elements of the mid 18th century, or Louis XV period, were re-imagined for that new era by the foremost English cabinet makers of the time, following the aristocracy's revitalised interest and engagement with the earlier ancien regime era. During the 1830s and 1840s notable figures such as Robert Blake and Edward Holmes Baldock, the former described as a 'cabinet inlayer and buhl manufacturer' and the latter a dealer, maintained successful businesses by primarily supplying their often aristocratic patrons with such 'Franglais' objects. One of Baldock's preferences, certainly in his intermediary role as part of affluent and often influential clients' major commissions, was in his use of craftsmen and experts who specialised in areas such as marquetry. In essence, the true talent of Baldock, and indeed other first rate marchand merciers like him, was in their ability at selecting furniture made by the most prominent and skilful cabinet makers of their day, executed in the most fashionable contemporary styles.
