Dave Regester (UK) Zircote bowl 5x9cm. Signed

Ray and I started our woodturning careers at about the same time and I think he probably heard of me via Richard Raffan who lived in Devon near me. He asked me to demo at an event in the midlands and then when he had the idea of setting up the AWGB he asked me to help with that. His membership number was 1 and mine was 2!  His enthusiasm for the craft knew no bounds and he  was evangelical about educating the world on its qualities as a pastime.  He knew everyone in the turning world and he was as helpful as possible   to anyone who needed advice. He recommended me to Batsfords the publishers when they asked his advice for someone who could write a book on Woodturning which led to me producing 4 books on the subject.

Ray’s piece given to me to complete was a roughed out 4” x 2” Zircote bowl glued to a spigot. This fitted perfectly on my Axminster 4 jaw chuck and really all I could do with it was finesse the shape which Ray had left.  There was not much room to manoeuvre so I just made it as elegant as I could and finish it with finishing oil.  I do not like hard gloss finishes as I think this conceals the quality of the wood. I debated whether to leave the spigot  on the finished piece, perhaps turning a few captive rings from it but I loath contrasting coloured woods and decided that simple elegance was more Ray’s and my style.  I just hope that I have succeeded and that someone else also likes it.
