Ernst Haas was an early pioneer of color photography and member of the celebrated photo-journalist cooperative Magnum. According to the Getty Images website, Haas described himself as a "painter in a hurry." There is a distinctly "American" perspective in his views of the Western landscape of the late 1950s and early 1960s.
Ernst Haas (American/Austrian, 1921-1986)
A pioneer of color photography, Ernst Haas is celebrated as one of the most influential photographers of the 20th century. Born in Vienna, Haas began photographing returning prisoners of war. He joined Magnum in 1949, and moved to the United States in 1951. It was there he began experimenting with Kodachrome color film, becoming the premier color photographer of the 1950s. In 1953, LIFE magazine published his 24-page color photo essay. The Museum of Modern Art in New York hosted a retrospective of his work in 1962, marking the first color photography exhibition held by the museum. Haas published numerous books throughout his lifetime.
