TELECOMMUNICATIONS Incunable. - A.H. KELLOGG (printer and publisher).
The New York & New Jersey Telephone Company ... List of Subscribers connected Nov. 16, 1885. New York: [printed and Published by A.H. Kellogg, 1885] Octavo (9 1/16 x 5 3/4ins.; 230 x 146mm). Pp. [1-4; 107]-256; [5-6 blank, 7]-106. (Fragile, 18 leaves detached and loosely inserted, occasional small splits and chips). Pink-toned paper wrappers (later cloth backing, chipped margins).
Provenance: Wm. J. Richardson, subscriber, of 125 South Oxford St. Brooklyn (tel. number: Brooklyn 345, inscription on upper cover).
A very early telephone directory, not in NYPL or NYHS. The book has been bound with the New York City section (pp.5-106) at the rear, this seems to have been 'as issued', perhaps because the subscriber lived in Brooklyn (pp. 109-151). This seems to be the only extant copy of this particular directory, and very early (perhaps the earliest for this particular company). The earliest Directory for the NY & NJTC in the Library of Congress is 1892; the New York Historical Society do not have a copy (although they do have a sister publication, from the same printer, probably the same number of pages, issued to subscribers to the Metropolitan Telephone & Telegraph Co., dated Nov. 16 on the upper cover, but Nov.15 1885 on the title, their copy is lacking the lower cover which includes the map showing the reach of the 'lines' of the 'telephone co.', which is present here). No copy in the New York Public Library.
