Where The Wild Things Are. Complete Set of 4 Fine Art Color Prints from the artist’s Caldecott Medal Award Classic WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE (1963), these prints were manufactured in 1971 as part of a series of 19 images selected from eight different titles by Mr Sendak and newly re-photographed from the original artwork at the Sendak Archives at the Rosenbach Museum & Library (Philadelphia) to allow friends and collectors the opportunity to acquire top grade reproductions to hang on their walls without having to mutilate any of his books.
All of these prints were originally issued unsigned, but over the past 41 years the artist had autographed small quantities of copies for friends and for concessionary sale. These prints were signed by Sendak during the middle 1990s as part of 200 sets prepared to accompany the 1996 traveling SENDAK IN ASIA exhibition, and art intentionally unnumbered so as not to suggest any inaccurate limitation.
Each print is SIGNED IN FULL in ink by the artist at the lower right corner of the image. And whereas in the book these separate pictures are reproduced as double-page spreads divided in the middle and printed on two separate pages with a center crease, here each picture is now printed for the first time on a single sheet of paper. The actual image size of the first three prints measure 235 x 515 mm (9-1/4 x 20-3/16 inches) while the fourth print image measures 163 x 510 mm (6-7/16 x 20-1/8 inches), each with extra margins on larger paper.
