Peter Kolbe (Balthasar Lakeman) Caarte van de Kaap de Goede Hoop [Map of the Cape of Good Hope]

This 1727, widely influential map is seldom available in the market. It is from Peter Kolbe's influential book on the Cape of Good Hope.

The Dutch edition of Kolbe's book was widely read (Naaukeurige en Uitvoerige beschryving van de Kaap de Goede Hoop). According to Theal (Catalogue of South African Books and Pamphlets, Maskew Miller, 1912), Kolbe's book was the basis of "everything written on the region for 50 years thereafter".

Lakeman's posthumous Dutch translation of Kolbe's German book on the Cape included this map of the Cape of Good Hope. It was a new engraving, but closely derived and insignificantly different from Valentijn’s main map of the Cape: Nieuwe Kaart van Caap der Goede Hoop in hare rechte jegenwoording staat. An inset map in the top right-hand corner of Valentijn’s map was replaced by Lakeman with a square title cartouche; Lakeman's distance scale at the bottom of his map filled some of the space occupied by the title cartouche on Valentijn's map.

Although the map was derived from Valentyn's map, numerous, widely published and popular derivative maps attributed their origin to Kolbe/Lakeman's map.

This map is printed on firm paper and is in fine condition and uncoloured, as issued
