280pp. Softcover. B/W Illustrations throughout text. Bumping to edges and a few grubby marks to edges of text-block. Top right hand edge of first few pages has a light stain extending about 7mm into the margin, not affecting text. Light random foxing to first few pages. Though the book shows evidence of avid use, the contents are pleasing and binding is secure. A very special copy in that not only is it signed by the author on the title page, but it is also inscribed by the widowed wife of Captain Adrian Curlewis on the introduction page. Furthermore, it also contains a 3 page hand-written letter by Betty Curlewis to Dr Frank Bradlow, thanking him for sending her an article about her husband.
Captain Adrian Curlewis was the son of Australian children's writer Ethel Turner. He enlisted in the AIF in 1940. When Singapore fell in 1942 he became a prisoner-of-war and for the next three and a half years he secretly kept two diaries documenting the atrocities and conditions of Changi Goal and the Burma-Thailand Railway.
