431 pages: colour illustrations. Folio. Cloth, dust wrapper. Front endpaper creased. Pages 25-285 consist of facsimile reproductions of the original journal and the 71 drawings accompanying the manuscript. The remainder of the volume consists of the new transcription and English translation of the journal. No. 353 of an edition limited to 750 copies.


Simon van der Stel's journal of the expedition to Namaqualand in 1685 was rediscovered in 1922 by Gilbert Waterhouse. The manuscript had been part of the library of Baron Hendrik Fagel, secretary to the States General in Holland, who had removed it to London in 1794, when the French invaded Holland. Includes 71 colour reproductions of drawings presumed to be the work of Hendrik Claudius, who had executed similar work for Bergh's expedition of 1683.
