It has slight faults.
Measurements: 83 x 31 x 22 cm.
The piece is worked with a language clearly framed within the Hispanic current. The sculptural treatment of the head and its arm fall inert, the weight of the body that has expired and lies dead, stands out. The piece is worked only from the front, in such a way that it is clear that it was conceived to form part of a larger whole, so that the viewer could only see it from this perspective. Technically, the artist achieves great detail and also great expressivity by capturing all the folds of the canvas, which he folds in a very expressive manner and leaves open in the chest area in such a way that the wound caused by the lance during the crucifixion can be seen.
Given the importance given to religious images in the Hispanic world, during the 18th and 19th centuries ambitious pictorial series and extensive iconographic programmes were created for churches and convents, as well as printed prints, medals and reliquaries for private devotion. As a whole, regardless of their size or medium, these images fulfilled the aim of sacralising everyday life beyond the altars. Among this broad repertoire we would like to highlight those painted replicas of a particular devotional sculpture, whether of a Christ or a Virgin, which technically recreate their original location as well as depicting the figure in question.
