Reliquary bust; Spanish Renaissance school, 16th century.
Carved wood with 18th century polychrome.
It presents faults in the polychrome.
Measurements: 32 x 30 x 13.5 cm.
Reliquaries of this type were somewhat common from the Gothic period, usually mentioned as "testas" in the documentation contemporary to their creation and used to contain relics of the head, as carvings of arms, etc. were used for relics from another part of the saint's body. It should be remembered, however, that at that time practically any item that had been in contact with the saint or his mortal remains (cloths, burial soil, etc.) was considered to be a sacred relic. The best examples were made of precious metals, but specimens such as the present one were also highly valued, both for their container and, above all, for their content. The evolution of the centuries can be seen in the details of the carvings.
Aesthetically, the work is close to the precepts developed by the sculptor Pablo de Rojas (Alcalá la Real, 1549 - Granada, 1611), an artist who marked the beginning of a new era and the emergence of great Andalusian imagery during the 17th century, the son of a painter from Sardinia who settled in Alcalá la Real. In 1579 he moved to the city of Granada, at that time at the height of the artistic boom, where he was taught by Rodrigo Moreno and became the teacher of Juan Martínez Montañés. Among his most notable works is his work on the altarpiece of the Monastery of San Jerónimo in Granada, where crucifixes predominate. His work is characterised by the evolution of his style to a completely Baroque style of verve and dynamism, as can be seen in the carving shown here, with an oval structure, in which the figure of Saint Joseph is shown: tremendously pathetic, with a marked dynamism and a highly expressive face, without, however, falling into vulgarity. The figure is presented through calm attitudes and sober gesticulation.
