Spring-driven chronometers were used by mariners to calculate an accurate longitude so as to work out their position at sea. Precision chronometers of this type were made from the late 18th century; with the best chronometers produced in England and France. As the present chronometer shows, they were usually mounted in a brass gimbal to offset motion at sea and held in a wooden box with two covers. Like many chronometers, this example no longer has its original outer wooden cover – navigators often removed the lids so that they could read the time more quickly while the chronometer remained protected by the glazed middle section
Condition:
The chronometer is in good condition, consistent with age. It bears natural signs of age and use. The dial and the plate with some wear, scratches and small chips on the glass. The body partly with small scratches. Original cover lost. The dimensions of the wooden case measure 20 x 21 x 21.5 cm. Clockwork running, Long-term precision and regularity cannot be guaranteed.
