* A Crimea Medal to Private J. Daw, Derbyshire `Baptism of Fire` Regiment, Wounded at Alma River, 20.9.1854, Crimea 1854-56, three clasps Alma, Inkermann, Sebastopol (Jesse Daw. 95th Regt.), contemporarily engraved in large upright serif capitals, contact marks, very fine, in an associated red leather case The 95th (Derbyshire) Foot saw some of the heaviest fighting during the Crimean Campaign and the regiment was in the forefront of the attack across the Alma River. Casualties were so high to the regiment for this action that the Colours were handed to Private James Keenan who triumphantly planted it on the earthwork of the Great Redoubt. The 95th were also the last regiment to carry the Colours into battle after the order was passed just before the Battle of Inkermann. The regiment continued to serve in the trenches even after being reduced to less than one hundred officers and men as a result of Inkermann, this led to their nickname Òthere may be few of the 95th left, but those are hard as nailsÓ.
