800-888 AD A cast trefoil mount comprising; a gilded central boss with three D-shaped chip-carved arms, outside this, three D-shaped plaques with chip-carved palmette motif, a pierced lug at the junctions of the plates and a pierced trefoil plate at the extremity. Cf. Backhouse, J., Turner, D.H. & Webster, L. The Golden Age of Anglo-Saxon Art: 966-1066, item 12 (the Winchester reliquary). 15 grams, 39 mm. (1 1/2"). Private collection, Nottinghamshire, UK; acquired late 1980`s-early 1990`s. Trefoil mounts were used as strap-distributors on Carolingian sword belts.
