Malick Sidibé, (b. Mali, 1935) Silver gelatin print Signed and dated `Malick Sidibé 2011` (lower right) 50 x 40cm (19.7 x 15.7in) Unique print

Framed and glazed

Malick Sidibé`s talent was recognised at an early age when he was selected to study at the School of Sudanese Craftsmen by virtue of his prowess as a draughtsman. Here he developed the skills and passion for photography that formed the basis of his long and highly successful career. Shortly after graduating he opened his own photography studio in the city, called `Studio Malick`. Through his studio photography, which became increasingly popular, and by covering the city`s parties and social events, Sidibé captured the energy and excitement of the cultural and social shift that was taking place in Mali in the late 1950s through to the mid-1970s. His photographs have since gained conic status and inspired new generations of photographers both from within Africa and worldwide.

Now widely collected and exhibited internationally, Sidibé won the Hasselblad Award for photography in 2003, was awarded the Venice Biennale`s Golden Lion lifetime achievement award in 2007 and in 2008 the ICP Infinity Award for lifetime achievement. Sidibé was also the subject of Dolce Vita Africana a documentary released in 2006. Acquired directly from the artist Mr Olivier Sultan Director of Musée des Arts Derniers, Paris A private collection, Italy Click here to view Catalogue
