* Viyé Diba, (b. Senegal, 1954) Mixed media on canvas 63.5 x 56cm (25 x 22in)
Framed
Viyé Diba was born in 1954, in Karentaba, Senegal and lives and works in Dakar. Diba studied art education at the National School of Fine Arts in Dakar and after winning a scholarship, went on to complete a PhD in urban studies in Nice, France. As well as serving as president of the National Association of the Visual artists of Senegal (ANAPS), he also teaches at the National School of Arts in Dakar.
Diba`s practice has evolved over the years from small format painting to three dimensional works that have led to large metaphorical installations. He incorporates into his pieces, found materials from the environments in which he`s working and also uses traditional materials, such as fabric and vegetable dyes.
Viyé Diba is primarily interested in the mysteries of communication mediated by the discourses between the local and the global, globalisation and internationalism. In the last decade, Diba`s work has become increasingly politicised, he is interested in the nature of contemporary society and how Africa positions itself for the future.
Viyé Diba`s work has been shown as part of numerous international exhibitions and events, including the 2010 and 1998 Dak`Art Biennial; 1995 and 1997 Johannesburg Biennale; and 1993 Biennale d`Abidjan.
Please note that in addition to the 20% VAT on the buyer`s premium, import VAT at the rate of 5% will be added to the hammer price. Click here to view Catalogue
