Chéri Cherin, (b. Democratic Republic of the Congo, 1955) Acrylic on canvas
Signed and dated `Cheri Cherin 2011` (lower right)
208 x 136cm (81.9 x 53.5in)
Chéri Cherin was born in 1955, he lives and works in Kinshasa, in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Originally named Joseph Kinkonda he invented the name Cherin by using the first letters of attributes he posesses; (C-créateur/creator, H-Hors série/exceptional, E-expressionniste/expressionist, R-remarquable/remarkable, IN-inégalable/matchless).
Cherin studied art at the Academie des Beaux Arts in Kinshasa, during this time he created posters and murals for the local area, which illustrated everyday scenes and dealt directly with social and political issues. This passion for social and political education, invariably delivered with biting satirical humour, has informed Cherin`s work throughout his career.
Cherin is one of the key members of the Popular Art Movement of Kinshasa, whose aim is to create art that a wide audience of Congolese people can relate to. But while his work has its roots in his local community dealing with contemporary issues including; corruption, poverty, injustice and social inequalities its appeal is universal and international.
In Le pouvoir du temps présent, (Today`s Power) Cherin spotlights the opportunism and corruption embedded in the global financial and political system; In this painting, the name given to the rocket is `G20`, (the same name given to the International economic forum) and the `nuclear engine` depicted is controlled by Chinese and Middle Eastern people.
Biography:
Cherin`s work has been exhibited widely in galleries and museums throughout the world including The Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao, Tate Modern, London, Museum Kunst Palast, Düsseldorff and Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris. Acquired direct from the artist A private collection, France Click here to view Catalogue
