BERT GEER PHILLIPS (1868-1956): RED HOUSE IN THE GARDEN Oil on canvas, signed 'Bert Phillips' lower left. 14 x 18 in., 18 1/2 x 22 1/2 in. (frame).Note: Hudson, New York-born painter Bert Geer Phillips studied painting at the Art Students League in New York City and the Julian Academy in Paris where he met fellow artist Ernest Blumenschein. In 1889, Phillips and Blumenschein planned a trip together from Colorado to Mexico. On the way, however, their wagon lost a wheel outside of Taos, New Mexico and the two artists were so enamored of the New Mexico landscape that they travelled no further. Phillips stayed in Taos and founded what is now known as the Taos Society of Artists. He is best known for his paintings of the people of the New Mexico pueblos.
