Autograph letter signed ("J.Q. Adams") as a Congressman from Massachusetts, to Ambrose Spencer, Esq., of Albany, New York, condemning John Calhoun’s doctrine of nullification and identifying slavery as the core of the conflict of interests between the North and the South 

3 pages (255 x 203 mm) on a bifolium of wove paper (watermarked H & O), Quincy, 14 September 1831, reception docket on verso of second leaf ("J. Q. Adams | Sept, 14. 1831."); a few words lightly inked (not faded), short fold separations, closed tear in lower margin of first leaf, mounting remnant on verso of second leaf.
