Provenance
Sotheby's London, 26 May 2021, lot 45
Catalogue note
The maker's mark on this box is no. 3774 in Grimwade, which he had found on a 'gold and agate box 1775', possibly this example. This means that the maker's mark must have been entered before 1773 in either the missing smallworkers' register (1738-1758) or the missing largeworkers' register (1758-1773). While these 'unregistered' marks were sometimes attributed by Grimwade, it has not been the case for this one.
