A gold and hardstone bonbonniere, probably London, 1775

circular, the hinged lid set with a circular figured agate plaque resembling the head of a partridge, framed by a band of engraved fruiting vine within geometric leaf border to either side, the sides and the applied curved thumbpiece decorated with intertwined oak branches carrying acorns, the underside centred with the initials PE, formed by husks, the interior with wavy rim, maker's mark R.G in script in a quatrefoil, British lion, London leopard's head, date letter for 1775

Catalogue note
The maker's mark on this box is no. 3774 in Grimwade, which he had found on a 'gold and agate box 1775', possibly this example. This means that the maker's mark must have been entered before 1773 in either the missing smallworkers' register (1738-1758) or the missing largeworkers' register (1758-1773). While these 'unregistered' marks were sometimes attributed by Grimwade, it has not been the case for this one.
