Catalogue note
John Vernon Orchard, the son of Joseph Orchard, a Stourbridge-born glass cutter, and his wife, Sarah, was born in Birmingham on 12 October 1853. His name first appears in the Stevens & Williams design books on 30 October 1883 and he became chief designer for the company shortly afterwards. By 1911 he was working for Corbett & Co.: ‘ROCK CRYSTAL ENGRAVERS. - Several good Men Wanted; constant employment; good wages. - Apply with confidence to John Orchard, c/o Corbett and Co., Royal Castle Glass Works, Tutbury, Staffs.’ (County Express, Stourbridge, Saturday, 11 March 1911, p. 4d) He died in April 1921.
