Dress carving or capipota of the Pietà. Cordovan school, 19th century.
Carved and polychrome wood. Original cloth robes with brocade details and inlaid silver beads. The velvet mantle with silver stars and the numerous layers of gauze and velvet stand out.
In good condition, with all the original decorative motifs and details of the period.
Measurements: 36 x 23 x 20 cm (carving); 52 x 28 cm (cross); 58 x 36 x 30 cm (total).
Exquisite religious ensemble composed of the Virgin Dolorosa with Christ recumbent on her lap, thus composing the iconography of the Pietà. The Virgin Dolorosa is a sculpture with an uncarved wooden trunk, sketched legs, and articulated arms, all in wood. The body of the recumbent Christ is exquisitely carved in wood and polychromed with absolute realism. The Virgin Mary, who has just received the dead body of her Son, raises her right arm in pain. It is a gesture of anguish and loneliness that contrasts with the serenity of the inert body of her Son, whom she holds with her left hand resting firmly on Christ, but it is also an attitude of asking for help, of understanding, of compassion, which she seeks from the spectator contemplating this scene as the procession passes along the street in front of her eyes. Both the communication with the spectator and the theatricality of the scene are Baroque features. Christ's body forms a diagonal that lends asymmetry to the whole. The large, abundantly folded robes offer contrasts of light with a baroque influence. The base is in stuccoed wood that imitates marble, which indicates its chronology at an early point in the 19th century. The piece includes numerous decorative elements preserved in perfect condition. In addition, the Virgin is dressed in her original clothes with brocade details and inlaid with silver beads. The velvet mantle with silver stars and the numerous layers of gauze and velvet stand out. The sculptural technique is exquisite, as is the incarnation and detailing of Christ's body.
