Art-deco FRANCE vase. France, ca. 1940.
Moulded glass.
Signed France, Made in France, on the reverse of the base.
Wear from use and the passage of time.
Provenance: Spanish private collection, formed between 1970 and 1995.
Measurements: 16 cm (height); 8.5 cm (largest diameter).
French vase, Art Deco period, in moulded and frosted glass, of circular forms, with vegetal decoration, in the form of leaves and geometric decoration towards the upper part.
Art Deco is a name derived from an exhibition in Paris in 1925 (Exposition des Arts Decoratifs et industriels Modernes) where the best French artists exhibited their pieces in this new style. Art Deco has been called "the perfect expression of the extravagance of Paris during the 1920s".
Many of the glassmakers of the Art Deco period used the techniques of pressed and moulded glass that adhered to the aesthetics of the machine and made glass affordable for all. However, these techniques were developed to create high quality glass that was well suited to the sculptural forms popular at the time and were usually finished by hand. New colouring and acid-etching techniques were employed to create entirely new and original effects.
