Measurements: 12 x 7 x 4,5 cm (bottle); 14 x 8,5 x 5,5 cm (box).
Guerlain "Mitsuoko" perfume bottle in moulded glass. Original lithographed cardboard box.
In 1919, Europe was fascinated by Japan and the culture of the Far East. This was the moment when Jacques Guerlain named his new fragrance Mitsouko. Mitsouko means "mystery" in Japanese and symbolises passionate and mysterious femininity.Jacques Guerlain named his creation "Mitsouko" after the heroine of the best-selling novel of the time called La Bataille. Mitsouko, a beautiful married Japanese woman, secretly loves a British officer. In 1905, the Russo-Japanese war breaks out. Mitsouko awaits the outcome of the battle with dignity, nobly mastering her feelings.
Designed by Georges Chevalier, its bottle is highlighted with graceful scrolls typical of Art Nouveau. Its avant-garde stopper, in the shape of a hollowed-out heart, was a real technical feat at the time.
Guerlain is a French perfumer. The house was founded in rue de Rivoli in Paris in 1828 by Pierre François Pascal Guerlain. For one hundred and fifty years, it remained the property of the Guerlain family. Following its acquisition in 1994, Guerlain is now a brand of the Perfumes and Cosmetics branch of the LVMH group.
