"Apollonius of Perga's treatise on conic section represents the culmination of classical Greek geometry... His 'Conics' became the canonical textbook on the subject, eclipsing all of its predecessors" (Norman). Die Bücher V.-VII. galten als verloren, bis Borelli eine arabische Handschrift von Abu 'l-Fath al-Isfahani, die auf einer Übersetzung von Thabit ibn Qurra beruht, in der Bibliotheca Medici wiederauffand und neu herausgab. Ein achtes Buch blieb verschollen. - Sehr breitrandiges Exemplar, nur vereinzhelt gering stockfleckig. 3 Bll. mit kleiner schmaler Überklebung außerhalb des Textes. Bl. 18 der Vorstücke mit restauriertem Einriß. First edition of the books V-VII of the Conic Section, till then supposed to have been lost. They contain Apollonius' important discoveries, which earned him a place next to Euclid and Archimedes. - Minor foxing in places, three small paper slips on three leaves, restored tear to last preliminary leaf. A copy with wide margins bound in recent vellum from old material.
