Rene Gagnon autograph letter signed during WWII. Gagnon is famously one of the six Marines in the iconic war photograph at Iwo Jima. He writes a heartfelt letter to Pauline Harnois from Oceanside, California hoping she'll visit him before he ships out to war. Dated 26 April 1944, letter reads in part, ''...I've only got about a month or less left before we ship out...please, please come down so I can see you once more before going...after I leave the States, I'll be a long time gone, maybe forever, but let's not think of it...I'd even go over the hill [AWOL] and go to Manchester to see you if you wanted me to, but I know you don't want me to...Rene''. 6pp. on 3 sheets in pencil measure 6.5'' x 10.5'', on United States Marines Corps - Camp Pendleton letterhead, twice signed by Rene. Some discoloring on first page, else near fine.
