George Sutherland autograph letter signed and photo signed the year he retired as a Justice from the U.S. Supreme Court. Letter, dated 27 November 1938 on Supreme Court stationery reads in part: ''Dear Mr. Criss: I have read your thesis...As the subject of it, I have a feeling of constraint about making comments, but, speaking objectively, I do not hesitate to say that in my opinion you have done an exceedingly fine and discriminating piece of work...if I were your father I should be very proud, as I am sure he is...I am also taking the liberty of sending you a photograph taken shortly before I went on the bench...Geo. Sutherland...'' 2pp. letter on separate sheets of card-style stationery, measures 5.75'' x 7.75''. Near fine. Sutherland inscribes the lower left of the photo, ''For Nicholas R.
