A circular salver
Goldsmiths and Silversmiths Co. London 1937, of shaped circular design, gadroon border, raised on four scroll feet, the flat engraved crest and motto
Diameter: 47.5cm, 83oz
This crest (with its associated arms*) was granted by the Kings of Arms at The College of Arms in London to John Willoughby Meares, CIE (born 1871 died 11th January 1946), of Elstowe, Guildford in the County of Surrey on the 21st March 1923. He was an electrical engineer who had worked extensively in India from the 1890’s notably on large irrigation works and the building of earth dams, reservoirs, and canals for which service he was appointed a Companion of the Most Eminent Order of the Indian Empire (CIE) in 1922. He was also appointed to be a Land Tax Commissioner for the County of Surrey (London Gazette, 2nd August 1927 p. 5025). John was the son of Thomas Meares (born 1825 died 1917), of Clive Hall, Shrewsbury in the County of Shropshire. He married Frances Helen (died 8th December 1929), daughter and co-heir of Arthur Mapletoft Curteis, JP in 1898. John and Frances’ marriage produced a son, Oswald Mapletoft Meares (born 1902). As will be noted both the use of the thunderbolt in John’s arms and crest and the sentiment of his chosen motto alludes to his career as an electrical engineer.
