GEORGE WASHINGTON'S RIDING CROP. This unusual relic is accompanied by a July 4,1861 dated card stating "Presented by Washington's own hand to WILLIAM WESCOTT, Continental Post, during the Revolution, now in possession of a grand-daughter, Mrs. EMILY M. CHADBOURNE". There is an additional letter written in 1907 concerning the history of this "riding stick" stating that "it should be given to your son". The riding stick is about 3' long with two pinned metal ferrule's and a string wrapped end, all reminiscent of a cane fishing rod with good flexibility such as would be needed to urge a horse along as stated in a circa 1900 newspaper article that is fragmented telling of the various curios in Miss Emily Chadbourne's home in South Windham, ME. Among the curios listed that are also in the old custom case made for the "riding stick" is a "piece of lint" used by Washington's surgeon in the Revolutionary War". This piece of fabric is affixed to a card with a faded ink inscription as stated in the article. Also present, is a 3-page letter or diary entry dated October 25, 1780 telling of Benedict Arnold's treason with further notes dated into November on same 3-pages telling of hanging. There are several 1900 vintage pictorial postcards from Mt. Vernon and one postcard written to Miss Chadbourne written from Mt. Vernon stating someone was bringing her souvenirs from Mt. Vernon (probably the postcards). CONDITION: The riding crop is sound and solid with cracquelure in its patinaed finish. Documents, associated paper items are poor to fair, soiled, foxed and acid burned. the case made for display has one broken panel of glass that is loose with facsimile of 1861 card attached. 49794-2
