A FINE RUSSIAN RELIQUARY ICON OF ST. PROKOPIY, 18TH CENTURY. Here the fourth century martyr is finely depicted in Roman attire, dressed as a soldier with breastplate and fish scale armor. He holds an Orthodox style cross, symbol of his martyrdom and in the upper left corner, Christ delivers a blessing. In the lower left corner, an ornate cartouche with shell finial finely inscribed with a short narrative regarding the Saintā€™s life: "The martyr Prokopiy was [martyred] in the time of Diocletian in the year 5717 [303 A.D. by most accounts]; he was born in the city of Aelia [pagan name for Jerusalem] of a godly father named Khristofor and idolatrous motherĀ Feodosiya [Theodosia]; He underwent much suffering for Christ's sake after which he was beheaded and thus he died." Next to the cartouche, a square, deeply carved receptacle filled with dark beeswax. The upper margin inscribed ā€œImage of the Holy Great Martyr Prokopiyā€. Overlaid with a finely crafted, silver plated, brass, repousse, and chased riza with engraved cartouche repeating the inscription on the painted icon. 12.5 inches x 10.5 inches (32 x 27 cm).
