Adolf Jahn created numerous figures after literary works. Designed in 1893 the sculpture of Nathan the Wise is one of his best known works of Adolf Jahn, which he created after the homonymous work of the poet Gotthold Ephraim Lessing. Around 1910 this sculpture was executed in bronze by the foundry Gladenbeck too.

Condition:

The sculpture is in good condition, consistent with age. The base plate and the left hand of the figure are restored. Small bumping marks and occasional blemishes can be found partial. The serpentine socket shows partial bumping marks and blemishes. The upper shaft shows a horizontal crack. The height of the figure measures 63.7 cm. The total height, including the socket of 168.7 cm.

Adolf Ferdinand Walter Jahn (1858-1941)

Born in 1858 in Szczecin, Adolf Jahn studied between 1877-81 at the Berlin Art Academy. Subsequently he studied in Vienna with the sculptors, Anton Schmidgruber and Viktor Tilgner. In 1891, the sculpture taught together with Otto Greyer at the Technical University of Charlottenburg. His self-employment followed in the same year. Between 1893 and 1918 his works were shown regularly on the Great Art Exhibition of Berlin. In addition to monumental sculptures, he was focused on bronzes and portrait busts. (bde)

Adolf Jahn schuf zahlreiche Figuren nach literarischen Werken. Zu seinen bekanntesten Werken zƤhlt die 1893 entworfene Skulptur Nathan der Weise, nach dem gleichnamigen Werk des Dichters Gotthold Ephraim Lessing. Um 1910 wurde diese auch in Bronze in zahlreichen Variationen von der BronzegieƟerei Gladenbeck ausgefĆ¼hrt.

Zustand:

Die Skulptur ist in altersgemƤƟ gutem Zustand. Der Sockelplatte und die linke Hand der Figur sind restauriert. Partiell finden sich kleine BestoƟungen sowie vereinzelte Fehlstellen. Der Serpentinsockel zeigt partielle BestoƟungen und Fehlstellen. Der obere Schafft mit einem horizontalen Riss. Die Hƶhe der Figur misst 63,7 cm. Die Gesamthƶhe, inklusive des Sockels misst 168,7 cm.

Adolf Ferdinand Walter Jahn (1858-1941)

1858 geboren in Stettin, studiert Adolf Jahn zwischen 1877-81 an der Berliner Kunstakademie. Im Anschluss folgt ein Studium in Wien bei den Bildhauern Anton Schmidgruber und Viktor Tilgner. Ab 1891 lehrt zusammen mit Otto Greyer Bildhauerei an der Technischen Hochschule Charlottenburg. Im selben Jahr folgt auch die SelbstƤndigkeit mit einer eigenen Werkstatt. Zwischen 1893 und 1918 waren seine Arbeiten regelmƤƟig auf der GroƟen Berliner Kunstausstellung zu finden. Schwerpunkt seines Schaffens bildeten neben Monumentalbildnissen, Bronzen und PortrƤtbĆ¼sten. (bde)
