Cartel clocks were predominately manufactured in France from about 1750 onwards, but also to a lesser extent in England, Austria and Sweden. They owe their name to their appearance (cartella= bracket), since the cartouche-shaped, richly decorated front is their most typical feature. The gilded case is usually made of brass or bronze. In England they were often made of carved wood with vernis Martin decoration, depicting allegorical representations symbolizing the passing of time. The most beautiful cartel clocks originate from the period of Louis XV, they are fitted with the Rococo-typical scrollwork, flowers, fruits and shells. Around 1780 classicism prevailed and the cases became more symmetrical and strict.

Condition:
The cartel clock is in very good condition with minor signs of age and wear. The dial with several fine hairline cracks along the right side. A winding key is not included; no guarantee on long term precision and regularity. The size measures 50 x 26 x 13.5 cm. (nlu)

Fritz Marti
The French watch factory Fritz Marti was established in 1869 by Jean-Frédéric Marti in Vieux-Charmont. It specialized in the production of movements for pendulum clocks. From 1965, the company focused on the manufacture of metal accessories for the automotive industry (IPM Industrielle de Precision Marti). In 2005, the operation was stopped and continued from 2006 under the name IPM FRANCE as part of the UKM Group for the manufacture of precision automotive parts.
