This interesting lithograph by the French painter and illustrator Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen shows a study of a peasant woman of her time, standing to the left. The woman clasps her cloth, which is depicted in a very agitated way, over her chest. Despite her humble clothing the woman radiates an expression of self-confidence.



The lithograph is in very good condition. It is signed in the plate upper right “Steinlen” and titled in the plate lower right “La Payse”. The folio is further provided in pencil with the number “220/400”.

The overall dimensions are 56.4 x 37.7 cm.



Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen (1859 -1923)

Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen was a French painter and illustrator born in Switzerland. In 1878 Steinlen came at the age of 19 to Paris. It did not take long that he became acquainted with the Parisian circle of artists. Steinlen earned his money as a free artist by illustrating the magazine le Chat Noir and the collection of Chansons of the famous Cabaret singer Artiste Bruant. The artist exhibited his paintings among other institutes at the Salon des Indépendants. Nowadays works by Steinlen can be found in museums such as the Hermitage in St. Petersburg and the National Gallery of Art in Washington. D.C..

Diese ungewöhnliche Lithographie des französischen Malers und Illustrators Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen zeigt eine Studie einer französischen Bauernfrau ihrer Zeit, stehend im Profil. Die Frau hält ihr Tuch über ihrer Brust verschlossen, das in einem sehr bewegten Zeichenstil dargestellt ist. Trotz ihrer einfachen Kleidung macht die Frau einen selbstbewussten Eindruck.



Die Lithographie ist in einem sehr guten Zustand. Sie ist rechts oben in der Platte signiert „Steinlen“ und rechts unten in der Platte betitelt „La Payse“. Des Weiteren ist sie mit Bleistift mit der Auflagennummer „220/400“ versehen. Die Gesamtmaße betragen 56,4 x 37,7 cm.

Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen war ein französischer Maler, Zeichner, Grafiker und Illustrator schweizerischer Herkunft. Er kam 1878 im Alter von 19 Jahren nach Paris und fand dort schnell Anschluss an das dortige Künstlermilieu. In Paris schuf er Plakate für das Kabarett, illustrierte die Zeitung Le Chat Noir und die Chansonsammlungen des berühmten Kabarettsingers Aristide Bruant.

Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen stellte seine Werke unter anderem im Salon des Indépendants aus. Heute sind seine Werke in Museen wie dem Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg oder in der National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. zu finden.
