A rare late work in the post-impressionist style

Beginning in 1900, Émile Bernard sojourned alternately in France and in Italy, including Venice and Naples. While his productive early work led him to pointillism and eventually to cloisonnism and synthetism, he somewhat distanced himself from his experimental way of painting in his late work.

Condition:
The painting is in good condition, according to age, showing minor framing marks and craquelure. The paper has been laid on cardboard. The inspection under UV light reveals strengthening lines to the figure and the bouquet of flowers, as well as a few touch-ups to the background. The frame comes with slight wear. The dimensions are 81.5 x 105.5 cm, while the frame measures 103 x 122 cm.

Émile Bernard (1868-1941)
The French painter and graphic artist, who also wrote several theoretic essays, is considered an early representative of the modern art movement and a co-founder of the ‘Cloisonismus’ and the ‘Synthetism’. He is a member of the so-called School of Pont-Aven, which was founded by Paul Gauguin. Their members met in the same name French village in Pont-Aven in Brittany. Seltenes Spätwerk im post-impressionistischen Stil

Ab 1900 hielt sich Émile Bernard abwechselnd in Frankreich und in Italien auf, darunter in Venedig und Neapel. Während sein produktiveres Frühwerk ihn vom Pointillismus zum Cloisonismus und schließlich zum Synthetismus führte, distanzierte er sich in seinem Spätwerk mitunter wieder von seiner experimentellen Malweise.

Zustand:
Das Gemälde ist in einem altersentsprechend guten Zustand mit leichten Rahmungsspuren und minimalem Craquelé. Das Papier wurde auf Karton aufgelegt. Unter UV-Licht zeigen sich konturgebende Retuschen in der Figur und im Blumenbouquet sowie vereinzelte Retuschen im Hintergrund. Der Rahmen weist leichte Gebrauchsspuren auf. Die Maße betragen 81,5 x 105,5 cm, und der Rahmen misst 103 x 122 cm.
