Natalia Dumitresco (1915-1997)

A native of Bucharest, Natalia Dumitresco studied at the University of Fine Arts of her hometown (1934-39). In the last year at university, she married Alexandre Istrati, who was to become a well-known painter and exponent of Informel. During her initial period, Dumitresco was ascribed to figural painting. Her style opened up to abstraction once the couple moved to Paris in 1947. Here she was in close contact with the artists of the avant-garde and she took courses at the academy of André Lhote in Paris. A main part of her life was determined by the close friendship to Constantin Brancusi who made her and her husband the sole heirs of his work, and for whom she created a complete monograph. Dumitresco and Istrati became French citizens in 1956. Her works were presented at international exhibitions in Brussels, New York, Cologne, Tokyo and Paris for example. (tm)
