This work by Horst Janssen from 1970 is a dynamic drawing of an orchestra with horns and strings. However, the musicians are not human beings but monkeys – a recurring theme in the artist's oeuvre. Janssen rendered the monkey musicians in a stylized manner with a few well-placed strokes. A humorous and typically original composition!
The drawing is signed ‘Janssen’, dated ‘9 9 70’ and bears the dedication ‘Mit Liebesflecken für AnneLiese’ on the lower margin. It is in good condition. The fabric is mounted under a mat with adhesive tape. In places, the fabric is minimally thinned; above the lower edge with two small holes (backed).The frame shows light wear. The framed work measures 103 x 103 cm, the dimensions of the drawing are 86.5 x 81.5 cm.
Horst Janssen (1929-1995)
The German artist Horst Janssen completed his education from 1946 to 1952 at the National Art School in Hamburg under Alfred Mahlau. Then Janssen worked until 1956 for the colored paper factory owner Dessauer, in whose workshop he learned the technique of lithography. In 1957 he also learned etching under Paul Wunderlich. In the course of his very fertile creative period he received many awards and is considered one of the most important graphic designer and artist of the postwar period. (tfa)
