Mimmo Rotella (1918-2006)
Mimmo Rotella was born in Catanzaro in 1918. He began his studies at the Academy of Art in Naples, and graduated in Rome in 1944. A scholarship enabled him in 1951 to stay in the US, where he came into contact with the works of the artists Jackson Pollock and Robert Rauschenberg. After that he spent some time in Paris, where he became a member of the group Nouveau Réalisme. Influenced by the currents of Abstract Expressionism and the Art Informel, Mimmo Rotella developed his collages and décollages that apply in the form as ‘Manifesti Lacerati’ as his thematic invention. His works are represented in prestigious collections, including the Guggenheim Museum, New York, the Musée National d'Art Moderne and the Centre Pompidou, Paris and the Tate, London, Museum Ludwig, Cologne as well as the Museo d'Arte Contemporanea in Rome and Milan.
