Damien Hirst (b. 1965)
Damien Hirst received his artistic training between 1986 and 1989 at the Goldsmiths College in London. In 1988 he gained first public attention with his exhibition ‘Freeze’ held in an unused warehouse in London's port, where he presented a selection of his own works as well as the works of his fellow students. In the 1990s he finally became famous with works such as the animal bodies preserved in formaldehyde. Another well-known sculpture is the diamond adorned platinum cast of a human skull, exhibited in 2007 and sold for a record price in the same year. Damien Hirst generally deals with themes like death and life, religion as well as consumer culture. He is one of the most influential artists of his generation.
