‘A petite Japanese bridge spans the water lily pond, willows and water lilies line the banks, and the light plays in the dense foliage of the trees – this is how Claude Monet (1840-1926), the most famous among the French Impressionists, painted his garden, which he himself created in the 1880/90s in Giverny, a village in the Haute-Normandie. Giverny has since become a place of pilgrimage for artists, art historians and garden lovers – and for a photographer like Elger Esser, who has a special eye for the beauty of French landscapes. Interestingly enough, he photographed the floral and water magic of Monet's Garden primarily in black and white, at dusk or in moonlight. The magic of the place is preserved, what is added, is a moment of such irrationality as the evocation of a bygone era, an artist’s dream that has been in real existence for more than 100 years.’ (Freely translated from the blurb of the catalog).
