This painting by Hans Platschek shows the typical abstract visual language of the Art Informel, an art movement that was formed around 1945 in Paris with the intention to stand out from the prevailing geometric abstraction. The critic Michel Tapié spoke for the first time of the ‘significance of the formless’ and thus determined the term ‘L’art Informel’.
Condition:
The painting is in very good condition. Black wooden strip with traces of age and use. The dimensions of the stretcher are 116 x 88 cm, the total size with the frame being 118.5 x 90.2 cm.
Hans Platschek (1923-2000)
Hans Platschek was born in Berlin in 1923. In 1939 the family emigrated to Uruguay. Platschek began to study at the School of Art in Montevideo. In 1948 he held his first solo exhibition, a little later he took part in the 1st Biennial of São Paulo. In 1953 he returned to Germany. When traveling through Europe he mad acquaintance with Max Ernst, Hans Arp and Asger Jorn. From 1955-63 he lived in Munich, where he came into contact with the work of the artist group CoBrA and S.P.U.R. that introduced him to the Art Informel. His later works, however, became figurative again. Since 1958 he exhibited at the 29th Venice Biennale, the documenta II. In Kassel, and the 5th Biennial of São Paulo. After spending some time in London, Paris and Amsterdam Platschek finally settled down in Hamburg. (tm)
