Condition:

The work is in good condition. The corners of the cardboard show puncture holes and minor color losses. Verso traces of a former mounting. The dimensions of the cardboard are 49.9 x 36.4 cm.





Rolf Cavael (1898-1979)

Rolf Cavael initially trained as a photographer and worked in the film business. From 1924 to 1926 he studied typography at the Städel School in Frankfurt. He then worked as a teacher of applied graphics at the Frankfurt trade school. An encounter with Kandinsky in 1930 influenced Cavael artistic work. 1933 there was a first major exhibition of his work, which was closed by the Nazis. Cavael was banned from painting. After the war he resumed his artistic work again and founded together with fellow artists, the group ZEN 49 in 1949. Rolf Cavael is one of the most important representatives of non-representational painting in Germany.

Die Arbeit ist in gutem Zustand. Die Eckbereiche des Kartons zeigen nadelgroße Einstichlöcher und geringe Farbverluste. Verso finden sich Spuren einer einstigen Montierung. Die Maße des Kartons betragen 49,9 x 36,4 cm.

Rolf Cavael absolvierte zunächst eine Ausbildung als Fotograf und arbeitete beim Film. Von 1924 bis 1926 studierte er an der Städelschule in Frankfurt Typografie. Anschließend war er als Lehrer für angewandte Grafik an der Frankfurter Handelsschule tätig. Eine Begegnung mit Kandinsky im Jahr 1930 beeinflusst Cavael künstlerische Arbeit. 1933 fand eine erste große Ausstellung seiner Arbeiten statt, die jedoch von den Nationalsozialisten geschlossen wurde. Cavael erhielt ein Malverbot. Nach dem Krieg nahm er seine künstlerische Arbeit wieder auf und gründete 1949 zusammen mit Künstlerkollegen die Gruppe ZEN 49. Rolf Cavael zählt zu den bedeutendsten Vertretern der ungegenständlichen Malerei in Deutschland.
