Fritz Köthe (1908 – 2009)

The Berlin painter Fritz Köthe was initially trained as a house painter and studied from 1936 on at the Academy of Graphic Arts in Leipzig. Because with his realistic works he gained recognition neither in Nazi Germany nor in the postwar period, he earned his living by the end of the 1960s as a graphic designer for magazines and advertising agencies. Then he developed his characteristic pictorial type of photorealistic painted collages with motifs from advertising and magazines that make fascination and abysses of a life dominated by advertising and consumption to his subject matter. Thus Fritz Köthe is considered the most important German representative of Pop Art.

Die 5 Farbserigrafien als das Impressumblatt sind in altersgemäß sehr gutem Zustand. Die ursprünglich zugehörige Mappe fehlt. Die Darstellungen messen jeweils 70,1 x 60,1 cm, die Blattmaße betragen je 78,6 x 66,9 cm.



Fritz Köthe (1916-2005)

Der Berliner Maler Fritz Köthe absolvierte zunächst eine Ausbildung als Anstreicher und studierte ab 1936 an der Hochschule für graphische Künste in Leipzig. Da er mit seinen realistischen Arbeiten weder im Nazi-Deutschland noch in der Nachkriegszeit Anerkennung fand, verdiente er seinen Lebensunterhalt bis Ende der 1960er Jahre als Grafiker für Zeitschriften und Werbeagenturen. Dann entwickelt er seinen charakteristischen Bildtypus fotorealistisch gemalter Collagen mit Motiven aus Werbung und Zeitschriften, die Faszination und Abgründe des von Werbung und Konsum bestimmten Lebens thematisieren. Damit gilt Fritz Köthe als bedeutendster deutscher Vertreter der Pop Art.
