Condition:

With two point traces from an old mounting on the reverse at the upper edge. The paper is rippled due to the technique. The sheet is mounted under a mat. The sheet dimensions are 29.2 x 40.8 cm, and the mat measures 60 x 50 cm.



Fred Thieler (1916-1999)

Fred Thieler was matriculated at the juridical faculty in Königsberg until he was called into war service. After his return, he was not allowed to continue studying law reasoned by the Jewish origin of his mother. Therefore, he started studying at the art school Hein Koenig in Munich. After graduating, he disappeared into the underground and became close to the political resistance group Weisse Rose. After the end of the Second World War, he started to study painting at the Academy of Applied Arts in Munich. He co-founded the art group ZEN 49, whose aim was to bring abstract art closer to a wide audience. He worked as a professor at the Berlin University of the Arts from 1959 to 1981. In addition, he spent time as guest lecturer in the United Stated and in Paris. He represented Germany in the International Association of Art from 1976 to 1983.

Verso an der Oberkante sind an zwei Punkten Reste einer alten Montierung. Das Papier ist aufgrund der Technik wellig. Das Blatt ist im Passepartout eingelegt. Die Blattmaße betragen 29,2 x 40,8 cm und das Passepartout misst 60 x 50 cm.

Fred Thieler war auf der juristischen Fakultät in Königsberg eingeschrieben, bis er zum Wehrdienst eingezogen wurde. Nach seiner Rückkehr wurde ihm aufgrund seiner jüdischen Mutter das Jurastudium untersagt. Dies veranlasste ihn dazu, auf die Malschule Hein König in München zu gehen. Nach Abschluss seines Studiums musste er in den Untergrund abtauchen und hielt sich im Kreis der politischen Widerstandsgruppe Weiße Rose auf. Nach Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges studierte er Malerei an der Akademie der Bildenden Künste in München. Er war Mitbegründer der Künstlergruppe ZEN 49, die das Ziel verfolgte, dem breiten Publikum abstrakte Kunst näher zu bringen. Von 1959 bis 1981 war er als Professor an der Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Berlin tätig. Zudem verbrachte er einige Zeit als Gastprofessor in Amerika und in Paris.
