Herbert Zangs (1924-2003), Peitschenbild, Oil Painting, c. 1978
Oil on dotted creme-colored textile
Germany, c. 1978
Herbert Zangs (1924-2003) – German painter
Signed lower left in black brush ‘ZANGS’
Dimensions: 97 x 78 cm
In white painted wooden frame, dimensions: 102.5 x 83.5 cm
Very good condition
Provenance: Collection Fischer, Mönchengladbach, Germany
Painting on fabric: Zangs’ work is of experimental character, he started creating the ‘whip’ and ‘computer’ images in 1978
Estimate by Auctionata Expert: 6,000 Euro

Interesting large-format work by Herbert Zangs who is mentioned as a forerunner of the Zero movement. Black vertical curved lines are reminiscent of impressions of ‘whippings’ as the title implies. The lines contrast with the beige and crème colors dotted fabric. The composition is reminiscent of anthropomorphist shapes of Yves Klein’s experiments with paint in the 1960s. Zangs also experiments with color splashes in response to Jackson Pollock’s Action Paintings of the 1960s.

Zangs’ early period is characterized by expressive realism, before he started developing an experimental and independent style in the 1950s, ranging between Art Informel, Arte Povera and Minimal Art, incomparable with a certain art movement.

Condition:

The work is in very good condition, it shows partially foxing in the marginal areas. The dimensions are 102.5 x 83.5 cm and the frame measures 102.5 x 83.5 cm.

Herbert Zangs (1924-2003)

Herbert Zang was born 1924 in Krefeld. Shortly after the war he began his studies at the Academy of Art in Düsseldorf where he studied with Otto Pankok until 1949. Several study trips followed as well as longer stays in Paris, where he met the artist Wols. In addition to figurative works Zangs also created abstract works he calls ‘Whitening’. Further work groups included ‘Foldings’, ‘Plus-Minus’ works, ‘Knottings’, Relief-Paintings as well as travel images. Zangs was honored with numerous awards and exhibitions, amongst others at the Hamburger Kunsthalle, the Sprengel Museum Hannover, the Contemporary Art Collection of Germany in Bonn and the Stuttgart State Gallery.
