Condition:

The three figures are in overall good condition consistent with age. There are some abrasions, minor losses and age cracks. The statue of Christ with two holes for mounting on the reverse. Originally, the figure was probably mounted on a cross. The height, without base, ranges from 8.5 to 13.5 cm.



Ivory from Goa

In the early 16th century, the ancient Hindu city of Goa in southwest India became the capital of Portuguese India. During this time, a hybrid art and culture developed, merging Indian and European influences. Taking advantage of the cheap raw materials and labor in India, the Portuguese Jesuits commissioned religious carvings with Christian iconography. Thus numerous carved figures of the Madonna, St. Anne and Anthony, and Christ on the cross or as a child, were created. The small ivory sculptures from Goa, which are characterized by a range of similar features, remain sought-after collectibles to this day.

Zustand:

Die drei Figuren sind insgesamt in altersgemäß gutem Zustand. Es gibt stellenweise Bereibungen, kleinere Fehlstellen und Altersrisse. Die Christusfigur rückseitig mit zwei Montierungslöchern. Ursprünglich war die Figur wohl an ein Kreuz montiert. Die Höhe, ohne Sockel, beträgt 8,5 bis 13,5 cm.



Elfenbein aus Goa

Ab dem frühen 16. Jahrhundert war die alte hinduistische Stadt Goa im Südwesten Indiens die Hauptstadt von Portugiesisch-Indien. Zu dieser Zeit entwickelte sich dort eine hybride Kunst und Kultur die indische und europäische Einflüsse vermischte. Die portugiesischen Jesuiten profitierten von den billigen Rohmaterialien und Arbeitskräften Indiens und gaben religiöse Schnitzarbeiten mit christlicher Ikonografie in Auftrag. So entstanden zahlreiche Figuren der Madonna, der Heiligen Anna und des Antonius, sowie von Christus am Kreuze oder als Kind. Die kleinen Elfenbeinplastiken aus Goa, welche sich alle durch ähnliche Charakteristika auszeichnen, sind bis heute beliebte Sammlerstücke.
