Peter Lindbergh (b. 1944)
The German photographer and filmmaker Peter Lindbergh grew up in Duisburg and temporarily lived in Switzerland, before he was introduced to the world of art at the Academy in Berlin. He then went to Krefeld to study painting until he discovered his passion for photography in 1971. A few years later he moved to Paris, where he achieved his international breakthrough. Magazines such as āVogueā, āVanity Fairā and āRolling Stoneā became his steady customers, until he got engaged by Anna Wintour, the chief editor of the US-āVogueā, in 1988. Together they established the āSupermodelā trend of the 1990s, represented by models like Naomi Campbell and Cindy Crawford. His pictures, mostly in black and white, were published many times and exhibited in international museums, including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin and the Pushkin Museum in Moscow. The award-winning photographer lives in Paris, New York and Arles, today. (cbo)
