Steve McCurry describes his work as: ‘What is important to my work is the individual picture. I photograph stories on assignment, and of course they have to be put together coherently. But what matters most is that each picture stands on its own, with its own place and feeling.’ In the end he captures breathtaking pictures like the present group of monks during an exercise session.

Steve McCurry (b. 1950)
Steve Mc Curry is a native from Philadelphia and graduated in film and history at Pennsylvania State University. He has been internationally well-known as a freelance photographer and photojournalist since 1980, when he was awarded for his documentation on the Soviet intervention in Afghanistan with the Robert Capa Gold Medal. McCurry was active in many countries affected by war, such as Iran and Iraq, Beirut, Cambodia and Tibet. In 1986 he was accepted as a member by the famous photo agency Magnum and furthermore, he repeatedly received the title ‘Photographer of the Year’. McCurry's work have been exhibited internationally and were published in numerous books; most recently in ‘Untold: The Stories Behind the Photographs’ (2013). His portrait of a young Afghan girl with intense green eyes is probably his most famous photograph, taken at the Nasir Bagh refugee camp in 1984. (cbo)
