Nobuyoshi Araki experienced his international breakthrough with his depictions of tied women, with which he refers to traditional ‘Shunga’ woodcuts of the 18th century, as well as to the Japanese art of ‘Kinbaku’ (bonds), that combines elements of packaging with techniques of flower arrangements.
Condition:
Both works are in very good condition. The image size is 24 x 19 cm and the sheet size is 25 x 20 cm, respectively.
Nobuyoshi Araki (b. 1940)
Nobuyoshi Araki was born in Tokyo and studied at the Chiba University (Japan), from 1959 to 1963. Araki has published more than 350 books, so far. The central motif of his photographs is the nude female body. He also portrayed famous stars like the Icelandic singer Björk and Lady Gaga. Works by Nobuyoshi Araki are preserved by the Jablonka Gallery Cologne, and are also in the possession of the Tate Gallery London, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Photo Museum Winterthur (Switzerland), the Goetz Collection (Munich), as well as of the Art Museum Wolfsburg. In 2008, the photographer was awarded the Austrian Decoration for Science and Art. (cbo)
